Thompson Selected for National
Cancer Institute appointment
Ian Thompson, MD, director of the
CTRC genitourinary clinic and professor
and chair of the department of
urology at the University of Texas
Health Science Center at San
Antonio’s medical school, has been
named one of three co-chairs for the
national Cancer Institute Genitourinary
Steering Committee.
This committee is responsible for
reviewing protocol concepts and recommending
approval, revision, or
disapproval of the Cancer Treatment
Evaluation Program. The ultimate goal
of the National Cancer Institute is moving
toward a comprehensive approach
to the evaluation and prioritization of
clinical trials in genitourinary cancers.
Jaen Appointed to National
Family Medicine Board
Carlos Roberto Jaen, MD, a family
physician, the Dr. John M. Smith Jr.
professor at the University of Texas
Health Science Center at San Antonio,
and chair of the center’s Department
of Family and Community Medicine,
was appointed member-at-large to the
Association of Departments of Family
Medicine’s board of directors. His
term will run through 2010.
Medrano named to 100 Most
Influential Hispanics List
Martha Medrano, MD, MPH of the
University of Texas Health Science
Center at San Antonio, was listed
in the October issue of Hispanic Business
magazine as one of the 100 Most
Influential Hispanics® in the country.
The magazine cited Dr. Medrano’s
leadership of the Medical Hispanic
Center of Excellence in the Health
Science Center School of Medicine,
her work on the effects of childhood
trauma on women drug addicts, and
her participation with the National
Cancer institute-funded Redes En
Accion program that targeted cancer
awareness among Hispanics.
Francisco Cigarroa, MD, president
and professor of pediatric and transplantation
surgery at the UTHSCSA, was on the 2006 Most Influential
Hispanics list.
Wayne Receives Ethics Award
Richard Wayne, MD, a pediatric
emergency room physician, has
received the 2008 San Antonio Ethics in
Business Award from the Ecumenical
Center for Religion and Health.
Dr. Wayne also serves as Regional
Vice President for Christus Santa Rosa
Health Care and Administrator for the
Christus Santa Rosa Children’s
Hospital. At the hospital, Dr. Wayne led
the development of the Butterfly Room
(in-house hospice care), Center for
Miracles (a child abuse and neglect
assessment program), and SANE program
(evaluation and management of
sexual abuse in children in conjunction
with SAPD and Child Safe), as well as
leading expansions of the Pediatric
Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit, Children’s Emergency
Department, and outpatient clinics
(The Goldsbury Center for Children
and Families).
Henkes Wins Pathology
Society Award
David N. Henkes, MD, a former
president of the Bexar County Medical
Society, has received the George T.
Caldwell Award from the Texas Society
of Pathologists.
The award was established in 1954
to recognize distinguished service and
teaching excellence among pathologists.
The award is the organization’s
most prestigious and represents the
highest ideals in service to medicine,
community, and humanity as exemplified
by its namesake.
Dr. Henkes, who is and has been
active in a number of organizations,
is a partner of Pathology Reference
Laboratory and Pathology Associates
of San Antonio. He is currently the
medical director of Christus Santa
Rosa Laboratories, as well as chair of
the College of American Pathologists
Professional Affairs Committee
and alternate delegate in the Texas
delegation to the American
Medical Association.
