Dr. Kalmin Tapped For Directorship

The International Society of Blood Transfusion has announced that Norman Kalmin, MD, president/CEO and medical director of the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center, will join ISBT’s board of directors.

ISBT members voted Dr. Kalmin to be the director for the World Health Organization’s Region Northern Americas for 2006 to 2010. Kalmin, who immigrated to the U.S. from South Africa in 1976, will join the board at the ISBT’s general assembly during the International Congress in Cape Town, South Africa in September.

ISBT, headquartered in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, is a scientific society of that brings together more than 1,400 professionals involved in blood banking and transfusion medicine from more than 85 countries.

As a board member, Dr. Kalmin will deliberate congressional issues, review scientific decisions, assist in the fiscal management of the society, and help promote collaborative programs between individuals and countries involved in transfusion medicine. His duties also include recruiting new members from the North American region, maintaining contact with current regional members, and organizing scientific symposia, congresses, and presentations in the region.

Dr. Kalmin trained at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa, and completed a residency in clinical pathology in Buffalo, New York, and a blood banking fellowship in Atlanta, Georgia. He has more than 25 years of experience in blood and tissue banking, with expertise in bone marrow donation, infectious disease testing, and umbilical cord blood banking.

Dr. Langlinais Dies

Richard Paul Langlinais, MD, a 1957 graduate of UT-Medical Branch, died July 26 at the age of 80. Dr. Langlinais had been retired from family medicine since 1998.

ASAPS Taps Garza For Membership

Jaime R. Garza, MD, was elected to membership in the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery at the organization’s 2006 an-nual meeting in Orlando, Florida.

ASAPS is the only national plastic surgery organization dedicated solely to improving techniques and increasing safety in cosmetic surgery. Only eight board certified plastic surgeons in San Antonio have been elected in-to ASAPS membership.

Prior to opening his private practice in 2004, Garza established and served as chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at UTHSCSA.

Dr. Garza serves on the board of the San Antonio Sports Foundation and is involved in the development of the University of Texas Sports Sci-ence Institute, a collaborative effort among UTHSCSA, the University of Texas at San Antonio and the Univer-sity of Texas at Austin that incorporates education, sports research, sports medicine, sports psychology, and com-munity wellness.

In fall 2005, Garza served as a team physician for the New Orleans Saints during the team’s temporary relocation following Hurricane Katrina. He also serves as a team physician for UTSA and is a member of the San Antonio Rampage medical team.
