William L. Sammis, MD
Dr. Sammis passed away on July 25 at the age of 79. He
is survived by his wife, Pat Sammis, along with several loving
family members.
After completing medical school at St. Louis University
Medical School in 1951, Dr. Sammis did his internship at
Robert B. Green hospital, then practiced as a physician at
Fort Carson Army Hospital in Colorado.
Once he returned to San Antonio, he practiced medicine
at many local hospitals including the Nix Memorial,
Santa Rosa, Baptist Medical Center and Brooke Army
Medical Center.
A life member of the Bexar County Medical Society, Dr.
Sammis never officially retired from medicine, but as his
medical duties lessened, he was more able to indulge his
love for ranching, hunting and fishing.
Cynthia A. Villareal, MD
Dr. Villareal passed away on July 27 at the age of 49.
She is survived by her longtime companion, Abraham
Alecozay, MD, her dear friend and colleague Fernando
Guerra, MD, a host of loving family members and hundreds
of friends and colleagues in the medical field who
mourn her untimely demise.
A graduate of the University Health Science Center-San
Antonio Medical School, Dr. Villareal was certified in
three specialties: Pediatrics, Internal Medicine and Critical
Care Medicine. With credentials like those, she could have
chosen from virtually any medical career path, with possibilities
for national acclaim and untold riches. However,
as Chief of Staff for Southwest General Hospital, Dr.
Villareal instead chose to serve a patient population where
the need was greatest.
Dr. Fernando Guerra said of her, “She leaves us with a
profound sense of gratitude for all she has done. Her contributions
to the health and well-being of many women,
mothers, infants and children make for a truly inspirational
legacy.”
