Robert Walker Best
Scholarship
by Delbert Chumley, MD
Last year Dr. Steve and Brenda Best
lost their son in a tragic accident.
Robert Walker Best, Texas A&M class
of ’06, was an exceptional and talented
young man who had been accepted
to medical school for the fall of ’07. His untimely death deeply affected
the San Antonio medical community
which responded with their generosity.
Through the Texas A&M
Medical and Dental Society, a scholarship
in Walker’s name was established.
Over a short period, donations
from San Antonio physicians,
friends of the Bests, and members of
the A&M Medical/Dental Society
quickly funded the scholarship with
over $110,000.00.
The first annual Robert Walker Best
Scholarship was awarded this year to
Christie Hahn from Leander, Texas.
Christie, a kinesiology major, maintained
a GPR of over 3.9 while playing
for the A&M volleyball team where she
was selected team captain. Christie was
also president of the Fellowship of
Christian Athletes and will be entering
medical school next year. Dr. and Mrs.
Best and Walker’s brother were present
for the ceremony held October 6th in
College Station. Steve gave a very moving
speech to the over two hundred in
attendance and personally awarded
Christie her scholarship. This annual
scholarship will continue to honor
Walker’s memory and offer financial
aid to future Aggies pursuing a career
in medicine.
