While it’s no mystery that physicians possess the scientific intellect and human compassion to serve in the medical community, some physicians have been blessed to possess the hearts of artists as well.
Such is the case with ophthalmologist Dudley Harris, MD and family practitioner Miguel Vasquez, MD.
In addition to serving as San Antonio Medicine’s chief photojournalist, Dr. Harris also enjoys a respected reputation as a potter. His one-man show at his studio this month is a testament not only to his skill as a photographer, but also his wizardry at the potter’s wheel.
From classic glazed bowls made of gritty stoneware to whimsical slab plates that resemble pieces of toast, Dr. Harris crafts pottery that rivals any full time professional potter’s work.
He’s also the author of, “American Shield: The Beginning,” a moving pictorial view of basic training in the modern army.
Dr. Vasquez can only be described in one way: he’s totally hip and so is his vibrant, colorful and excruciatingly detailed art. His one man show last month at the trendy Gallista Studio Gallery on South Flores Street had visitors gasping with awe.
What makes his art so awesome is his exquisite eye for detail, as evidenced by his intricately tooled, bejeweled leather pieces and rhinestone-festooned skulls. Even his paintings have the kind of eye for detail that makes them collectors’ favorites.
But even though doctors Harris and Vasquez create art, they join hundreds of other area physicians in their love for art.
When BCMS Circle of Friends Director Joan Bailey announced her famous “Art Crawl” earlier this month, physicians, friends and BCMS staff members loaded up on two tour buses anchored at the Southwest School of Art and Craft, then jumped from gallery to gallery, eyeing the city’s impressive array of visual arts.
